Seniors May be Eligible for Vouchers to Spend at Farm Stands

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is currently in progress. Seniors, age 60+ who meet the financial criteria, are eligible to receive $20 worth of vouchers to spend on fresh, New Jersey-grown, fruits and vegetables at participating farm stands.

Seniors must be Sussex County residents and have incomes that do not exceed $20,036 annually if single or $26,955 if married. Seniors should note that the PAAD card is no longer acceptable as proof of eligibility. A 2009 income tax return, social security statement, valid Medicaid card, valid food stamp verification, or bank statement are acceptable proof of income eligibility.

Vouchers can be picked up at the Sussex County Division of Senior Services, One Spring Street – 2nd Floor, Newton, during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. In addition, vouchers will be distributed at numerous sites as indicated below.* Seniors are welcome to apply and pick-up their vouchers at any of these sites.

“This is a terrific opportunity for qualified seniors to purchase fresh local produce as part of their healthy diet. Participation in this program will not only save on seniors’ budgets but also support our local business owners. It is a win-win, especially in this economy,” said Stephen Gruchacz, Administrator for the Sussex County Department of Human Services.

Eligible, homebound seniors may receive vouchers through a proxy. For additional information about the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, the eligibility requirements or proxy requirements, contact the Sussex County Division of Senior Services at 973-579-0555 or seniorservices@sussex.nj.us.
