EFFORTS UNDERWAY TO FIND COST SAVINGS WHILE MAINTAINING SERVICE LEVELS

We are dealing with an extraordinarily difficult economy, and things could very well get worse before we see the light at the end of the tunnel. In this situation, the governing body owes it to the taxpaying public to seek out alternatives to "business as usual", to see if there is a way to cut costs while preserving service levels.

In an effort to find cost savings for the overburdened taxpayers of Wantage, the governing body is exploring the possibility of privatizing the tasks of mowing and maintenance at the municipal parks.

Bid specifications have been designed to reflect the existing level of service currently being provided by the Wantage Department of Public Works. We are awaiting the bid opening results next week to see if the concept would indeed provide cost savings.

It is entirely possible that there may be some nuances, ... some details, ... which are currently being provided to the sports organizations of Wantage Township that were not included in the bid specifications. Such situations are easily dealt with.

If there are adjustments that need to be made - if you have any concerns about what will happen regarding any existing service arrangements because of this bid - please contact the Township Administrator Jim Doherty, or the Recreation Secretary Jeanne McBride, to answer your questions and/or find an accommodation that you will be satisfied with.

It is natural in circumstances like this, for rumors to circulate and fears to escalate. Please rest assured that the governing body remains dedicated to providing you with the same level of service you are currently receiving. And please allow us the opportunity to address any questions or concerns you may have about what's going on, so that we all can make informed decisions on the issues which affect us so much.
