DAR American History Essay Contest 2008-2009
One State Winner from Sussex County
The Chinkchewunska Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, announce the winners in this year’s American History Essay Contest. The three winners are:Emilly Stoveken, grade 6 Immaculate Conception Regional SchoolThe topic for this year’s essay focused on the Gettysburg Address. “What message did the Gettysburg Address communicate to our war-torn nation in 1863? How are the ideals articulated in the speech still relevant for our country today?”

The winning essays were selected from 248 entries submitted from six Sussex County schools. The winners receive a DAR winner’s certificate as well as a bronze medal and a United States Savings Bond. Each participant receives a “Certificate of Participation”.
Emily Stoveken’s essay was selected as the best of the sixth grade essays
submitted by students throughout New Jersey. There was a total of 1240
essays submitted from fifth through eighth grade students from 44 New Jersey
schools. Emily’s essay has been forwarded to the regional competition.
On Saturday, April 25th a luncheon will be held in honor of the essay contest
winners at the Van Bunschooten Museum in Wantage Township. Also honored
will be the DAR Good Citizens from Sussex County High Schools. DAR State
Historian Mrs. Melva Paine Murray will attend to distribute the awards.
